Hello Birders:

On Tuesday morning, Fred led our SAS Shorts bird walk to Cascades Gateway
Park. It was a cool, damp morning. Ten (10) birders joined Fred for the
walk. It was 42 degrees throughout the walk. The wind really picked up
at the end, making it feel a lot colder. We walked around Walter Wirth
Lake which was about a one-mile walk. We observed (saw or heard) 29
species of birds.

Most notable sightings:

·  One *Great Egret* was on the south end of the lake;

· Two *Belted Kingfishers* were on the south part of the lake. One of
the kingfishers was somewhat active as it flew by a couple of times giving
its rattle call;

· We saw quite a few duck species including *Lesser Scaup,* *Common
Merganser, Mallard, American Wigeon, Gadwall, Bufflehead *and *Ring-necked

· A *Ruby-crowned Kinglet* was seen on the east side of the lake along the
trail next to Mill Creek;

· We got good looks at a *Cooper’s Hawk* in a tree at the southwest part
of the park.

A complete list of today's birds follows. *Our next SAS field trip will be
at Minto-Brown Island Park on Thursday, February 7th at 8:00 a.m. *Meet at
parking lot #3 at the end of Minto Island Road. The next *SAS Shorts*
field trip is at *Minto-Brown Island Park* on *Thursday, February 21st at
9:00 a.m.* Please join us if you can.
