Bill Proebsting has been finding a series of flycatchers sticking
around. Two days ago he found a WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE and a PACIFIC-SLOPE
FLYCATCHER at Luckiamute State Natural Area, then today he saw another
PACIFIC-SLOPE and had a good look at an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER along the
110 Road at Dunn Forest.
To put these in context, here are some late flycatcher dates from
Hendrik Herlyn's 2004 draft "Birds of Benton County" and the statewide
latest date according to "Birds of Oregon: A General Reference" (2001):
Olive-sided Flycatcher: Benton: no latest date given; statewide: 28 Sep
Western Wood-Pewee: Benton: 12 Oct; statewide: 8 Oct (maybe missed one?)
Willow Flycatcher: Benton: 26 Sep; statewide: 29 Sep
Hammond's Flycatcher: Benton 2 Sep; Lincoln 21 Sep; statewide: mid-Oct?
Pacific-slope Flycatcher: Benton 29 Sep; statewide: 8 Nov
There may have been some later local reports since 2004 (like the
"Western" Flycatcher at LSNA on 22 Nov a couple of years ago) but we're
at the point in fall where any flycatcher is worth mentioning.
Happy fall migration,
Camp Adair area north of Corvallis
