*SAS Ankeny Scouting Trip Report*

Hello all -

Barbara and one other person scouted Ankeny NWR in preparation for the
Salem Audubon birding field trip on *Sunday, November 16th at 7:30 a.m*.
The two of them scouted several areas around the refuge making the 10-mile
loop around the refuge. Stops included Eagle Marsh Overlook, Eagle Marsh,
Pintail Marsh, Pintail and Rail Trails as well as numerous pullouts. The
day started out very foggy with a temperature of 43 degrees but the fog
started lifting at about 11:00 a.m. They identified a total of 52 species.

Most notable sightings:

·   One *Merlin*;

· Two *Bald Eagles – *A sub-adult and adult around the Eagle Marsh and
Buena Vista Road area;

·   4020 *Cackling Geese*;

· Eight *Red-tailed Hawks.* At Eagle Marsh, one Red-tailed Hawk appeared
to have prey like a duck and went into the woods in the far distance and
then was attacked by another Red-tailed Hawk.  They saw the collision;

· Two *Hairy Woodpeckers *seen in the large oak tree at Eagle Marsh
Overlook. This is a good find in that we have not seen very many *Hairy
Woodpeckers* this year;

· This is the time for winter sparrows and they did not disappoint. They
observed 54 White-crowned Sparrows, 43 Golden-crowned Sparrows, 14 Savannah
Sparrows, 1 Fox Sparrow (Sooty), 1 Lincoln's Sparrow, 16 Song Sparrows, 6
Spotted Towhees and 10 Dark-eyed Juncos (Oregon).

 A complete list of today's birds follows. Our next SAS field trip will be
at Minto Brown Island Park on *Thursday, November 13th at 7:30 a.m. * Meet
at Parking Lot #3 at the end of the road into the park. Join Barbara and
Fred if you can.
