Hello,
Lisa and I led the first field trip of "Birding in the Willamette Valley" (a beginner's class) at Avery Park this morning. Before class started, I heard a BULLOCK'S ORIOLE. It turned out to be beautiful and birdy morning. There were many common forest birds like BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, WARBLING VIREOS & WESTERN TANAGERS. And common warblers: WILSON'S, BLACK-THROATED GRAY, TOWNSEND'S, ORANGE-CROWNED. We were also happy to hear a YELLOW WARBLER. We got a brief glimpse of a NASHVILLE WARBLER! We had a WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE and a few PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS. We got good looks at common birds like Brown Creepers, Spotted Towhees, Bushtits, Dark-eyed Juncos, Song Sparrows and more. Two students heard something I missed, a sound as described made me think of BAND-TAILED PIGEON. Sure enough, a moment later a flock of about 8 pigeons flew out the tree tops. The Douglas Squirrels were trying to steal the show however. They were often chattering and playing chasing games in the trees, providing much entertainment for us.
The Birding by Ear class is coming up next if anybody's interested:
