Hello
Lisa and I led an evening walk, on Wed 5-5, at Bald Hill Park for Natural
Areas Celebration Week. About 10 people attended.
We started at the Oak Creek parking area, walked up the main trail to the
off-leash path and then on to the oak savanna on the west side of Bald
Hill.
We had excellent looks at a male Rufous Hummingbird perched on a small
tree with his red throat reflecting the late afternoon sun. The oak trees
had fresh new leaves and attracted some warblers and others. We saw
ORANGE-CROWNED, TOWNSEND'S and BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS, as well as
HUTTON'S and WARBLING VIREOS. A MACGILLIGRAY'S WARBLER skulked in the
snowberry bushes. We heard the songs of a couple CHIPPING SPARROWS, a
WESTERN TANAGER and a HOUSE WREN. Many praire wildflowers have yet to
bloom but we enjoyed many Great Camas and Tough-leaved Iris blossoms.
