[birding] Polk County migration count this Saturday, May 8

Hi all,

This year's North American Migration Count has sort of snuck up on us,
since this is as early as the second weekend in May can possibly come.

For lack of time to consult with everyone about the best date (the
choices are either Saturday or Sunday), I'm going to just pick Saturday,
May 8 as the date for Polk County.

The protocol for this count is minimal. Basically, go birding by
yourself or with a friend in a part of the county that interests you,
and keep track of:

1) numbers of each species of bird that you can identify (whether by
sight or sound); and
2) your miles traveled (by car, bike, on foot, etc.) and hours spent in
the field.

Or, if you just want to count birds around your yard, you can use the
"feeder count" protocol where your just keep track of:

1) The peak numbers for each species that you observe during the day;
and
2) The number of hours that you spend paying attention.

Oh, and remember to have fun.

Afterwards send me the numbers and I'll tally them up to send on to our
state coordinator, Chuck Gates.

If you have an idea on where you'd like to bird in Polk County on
Saturday, please let me know in case that overlaps with someone else's
plans.

My own plans aren't very ambitious -- I think I'll go over to Luckiamute
State Natural Area and maybe loop back by way of Buena Vista. It would
be good if someone else can get to Baskett Slough and/or part of the
Coast Range.

Thanks & happy birding,
Joel
