VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
PROJECT TITLE: Meadowlark Territory Monitoring
ODFW PROJECT SUPERVISOR: Christine Hurst or Ann Kreager, SWWD,
Corvallis, 541-757-4186, x229
PROJECT LOCATION: Willamette Valley
DATE: April 17th thru June 5th
NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Up to 15
PURPOSE: To assist ODFW Grassland Biologist with assessing western
meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta) territory use and landscape
characteristics in the Willamette Valley.
SPECIFIC VOLUNTEER DUTIES: Visit roadside site between 5:00 -10:00am to
monitor meadowlark movement and behavior for approximately one hour per
site between mid-April through early June. Generalize the birds’
territory use by marking the observations on an aerial map. Must be
willing to survey four or more sites a minimum of three times each
throughout the project period. Volunteer can select preferred areas to
monitor within the Willamette Valley (Marion to Lane County) from a
pre-determined list. Monitoring can be done individually or in pairs and
conducted any day of the week between April 17thand June 5th.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must have excellent observational skills and be able to
identify most grassland birds, particularly Western Meadowlark, by sight
and sound. Will need to be able to differentiate grassland habitat types
and associated vegetation components. Must be “map-literate” and able to
translate visual and aural observations to an aerial map. Must be
comfortable working independently and willing to drive personal vehicle.
TRAINING PROVIDED: Must attend one training session. Training will be
provided in Corvallis on April 9thor in Eugene on (TBA). Volunteer will
be taught proper protocol of job duties, given an overview of maps and
datasheets, and receive hands-on training conducting the survey. Safety
concerns will be covered.
MATERIALS OR EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
SUPPLIED BY DEPARTMENT: ODFW will provide a list of survey locations,
maps and datasheets.
SUPPLIED BY VOLUNTEER: Volunteer will provide own transportation and
binoculars. Work independently, set your own schedule and report results
to supervisor. Dress in sturdy shoes, and wear layered clothing in case
of inclement weather or rain.
