                          Position Description

            Grassland Bird Territory Mapping/Nest Monitoring

                   EBA-1 Field Assistant – Temporary

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

Classification Title: Experimental Biological Aide-1, C3769 (Temporary)

Salary Range: $1,979 - $2,585 per month

Location: This position is located at the ODFW South Willamette
Watershed District Office in Corvallis, Oregon

Duration: Approximately 3.5 months between April 1, 2010 and July 16,
2010.

Position Detail, Duties, and Responsibilities:

This position functions within the Willamette Valley Grassland program
which has a focused effort on restoring, maintaining and enhancing
grassland habitats in the Willamette Valley ecoregion, with an emphasis
on restoring habitat for western meadowlarks and other priority
grassland dependent animals identified in the Oregon Conservation
Strategy. Grassland habitats are a priority habitat in the Strategy and
the Oregon state bird, the western meadowlark, is declining in the
western portion of it’s range within Oregon. The long-term goal is to
reverse trends in declining populations of Strategy species.

This project will assist the Grassland Biologist by conducting grassland
bird surveys to document territory size, nesting success, habitat
utilization for western meadowlark (Sternella neglecta) and vesper
sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus). Specific duties are as follows:

     1. Territory-mapping will be conducted for western meadowlark
during the breeding season at established survey stations
throughout the Willamette Valley, during May and June.
Territories will be generated from point data collected with a
Global Positioning System (GPS), and input into a Geographic
Information System (GIS) to calculate individual territory
        sizes.

     2. Nest monitoring will be conducted to provide data on western
meadowlark and/or vesper sparrow to provide data on reproductive
success and the incidence of predation/parasitism. Nests will be
located by observation of behavioral cures and systematic
walking through an area. Nests will be discretely marked and
revisited in a manner to reduce investigator-induced predation
        or nest abandonment.

     3. Vegetation data will be collected at each nest site and habitat
will be characterized within each territory, including
documenting percent cover of different field types, average
vegetation height, and presence of non-vegetative structures.

     4. Results of surveys will update information on site selection,
habitat characterization, area requirements, and reproductive
success with target species occurrence and breeding sites in the
        Willamette Valley.

     5. Field information will be summarized.

This position may be physically demanding, involves frequent travel and
irregular work hours and may require working on some weekends.

Employees will primarily be working independently in semi-remote areas.
Preferred skills, abilities, and experience include: familiarity with
Willamette Valley grassland birds by sight and sound; territory-mapping
or spot-mapping experience; vegetation sampling experience; good visual
and auditory capability; fast learner, and ability to keep neat and
precise field data. A valid driver's license and good driving record are
required. Previous experience and/or a degree in biological or natural
sciences are desirable and GIS experience a plus.

Applications accepted until a suitable candidate is selected. To Apply:
email, mail, or FAX a cover letter and resume to: Attn: Ann Kreager,

Employment Form (PD 100).
