Our group from Salem area found 40+ Evening Grosbeaks at Sulphur Springs Area by McDonald-Dunn Forest today. We had some"inside"guidance from Lowell who thought he had heard them several weeks ago while passing through. And, yes, he was right: Evening Grosbeaks! We just stopped by the road and looked and listened. Then went down to smell the sulphur....We were right in front of the trail to the sulphur springs.
We stopped by E. W. Wilson looking for YB Sapsucker when going-coming from Sulphur Springs Rd. We found the Sapsucker at approx. 1:30 PM going home. Lifer for some and Oregon Lifer for Many! The YB Sapsucker was on the south south of the road from the HQ.
If you live in this area, check out at least those Evening Grosbeaks. Thanks to Lowell and all the Salem group for a really great day. Grosbeaks just blew me away. Unbelievably neotropical....they seemed to be eating seeds on the fir trees to the north of us like Crossbills....
