Yesterday Johnny and I scouted our Riley Peak BBS route that starts at
Valley of the Giants and winds past Valsetz toward Falls City. On the
way up we found Purple Martins about mp 6 on the Falls city/Valsetz road
at their customary snags. (Alas, our last stop is at mp 6 1/2.) At mp 1
on the 100 road, past Valsetz about 3 miles, we saw Western Bluebirds, 2
Night-hawks and Rough-winged Swallows. At mp 7, I heard one Mt. Quail
calling. Dippers were feeding young at Boulder Creek bridge. One Dipper
was bobbing up and down on a rock at Warnicke Creek bridge. I don't
think we've ever been to that bridge without seeing a Dipper, but this
is the first time we've observed youngsters at Boulder Creek. Nice
weather, beautiful scenery.
