Hi all,
John Matthews from Salem Audubon sent me some photos last evening which
look good for Magnolia Warbler -- I think it's an adult female (still in
alternate plumage) based on the limited extent of black streaking on the
breast. No tail shots but clear views of the head, breast & flanks, and
partial views of the wings & belly, while the bird was perched in the
mid-branches of a willow.
John found the bird along the peninsula at Detroit Flats on Thursday
morning (22 Jul), around 08:30. From what I remember of the habitat
there, I think the bird could stick around for a few days at least.
Detroit Flats is on the south side of the town of Detroit. I can't
remember exact directions but basically, turn off from Hwy 22 and find
your way south through the town, past the school grounds, until you come
to an open area with a parking lot by the reservoir. From there a path
of sorts leads off toward the west, along a peninsula that sticks out
into the reservoir. This is one of the better hotspots in the
midvalley/western Cascades area, but hasn't been reported on much in
recent years since Steve Dowlan was living in Mehama.
Happy birding,
Joel
