Hello folks,

The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER (or at least a sapsucker acting like the
same one) was in the usual spot just south of E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area
around 1 PM today. Along with Craig and Marilyn Miller who were passing
through, I heard the bird once and had a couple of fleeting looks as it
did the hide-and-seek act that it seems to do on misty/rainy days, then
disappeared entirely for the next two hours.

The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was more cooperative, spreading its tail and
wing feathers and preening in some tall cottonwoods west of HQ.

Around 2:30 PM while working on a sandwich and staking out the HQ area,
Craig noticed a dark MERLIN that was perched in the treetop just west of
the gate, right over our heads. We don't know how long the Merlin was
around before Craig noticed it, but perhaps that wasn't conducive to
sapsucker watching.

Tomorrow is supposed to be better weather so hopefully the bird will be
easier to see.

Happy birding,
Joel
