Rich Armstrong and I were out there between 9:30 and 10:30 am with two birders from Portland. We heard it call a number of times and saw brief glimpses, not enough for me (but enough for them) to get a clear ID. The last glimpse at about 10:30 am was of the tail end of the bird flying west along the road.
We also saw the RS hawk. Not a bad bird for Jan 1.

Subject: [birding] E.E. Wilson sapsucker missing in the rain, shrike & R-s hawk present
Hello & Happy New Year, everyone!
This afternoon in a steady drizzle, I made a quick check for the
Yellow-breasted Sapsucker south of E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area
headquarters, but didn't find it. However the NORTHERN SHRIKE and
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK were perched in their usual spots just south of
there, and granted very good views as I strolled past.
I've been calling the sapsucker's favorite tree a maple, but today I
noticed that there are walnuts on the ground underneath it.
First bird species of the year? A flock of CANADA GEESE heard flying
over.
Happy birding,
Joel
