Hi Rich,

Nothing really new down at McFadden, except B. Proebsting's post of swallows. Small groups of pintail, ring-necked, widgeon, coots, and shoveler, remain with the large groups of mallards. Thousands of cacklers are in the fields as well as in the ponds. Duskies remain numerous. Green winged teal are conspicuously absent. Pied-billed Grebes seem to be more noticeable (one on McFadden, one on Pigeon Butte Pond). Rough-legged Hawks may be moving out of the area, as I am not seeing them on their previous normal stations. Harriers will be harder to see now that they are sitting on eggs (females). I wonder if the Merlins are moving north---I haven't seen one lately. Peregrine's may be moving , too. As far as I know, we never did get a Snowy or a Gyr. Some reports from Wash., esp. E. side (see BirdYak, Yakima, Wa, or Tweeters listserv).

---Will P.S. If you ever really have to get a Woody, the ponds off the Long Tom, next to the Monroe Sewage lagoons are always with them. I have two students who are putting up WD boxes. The new Sewage pond has a chain link barbed wire fence around it, but you can still see the water if you walk up to the gate. Widgeon and Wood Duck are using it, as usual. Probably the shorebirds will still stop in.

i have to send in the field notes for the chat wednesday and i am woefully short of sightings (it has not been a banner month for birds at all). so if you have seen interesting birds in last month but have not posted them to obol or midvalley, please send them to me.
