Hi folks,
Thanks to Michael Dossett I was able to pick up an easy "motorless
twitch" by spotting one half of the WESTERN KINGBIRD pair on the NW side
of Coffin Butte, on my lunchtime bike ride. The kingbird was perched on
a pasture fence along the north side of the driveway of the first place
south of Military Rd., on the west side of Wiles Rd. Hopefully this pair
will stay to nest.
Then, after riding a short distance up the 420 Road in Dunn State
Forest, and waiting out a mix of rain & hail showers, I found a nice mix
of songbirds including my first HERMIT & MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS of the
year, along with BLACK-THROATED GRAY, ORANGE-CROWNED & WILSON'S WARBLERS
HOUSE & BEWICK'S WRENS, PACIFIC-SLOPE AND HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHERS, and
EVENING GROSBEAKS.
Directions for Forest Road 420: From Hwy 99W just north of Adair
Village, turn west on Tampico Rd. and follow this for about 2 miles to
intersection with Wiles Rd., then continue 1/4 mile farther to trailhead
for Dunn Forest Road 400 on the left. Just 50 yards or so above the
gate, turn right on Road 420 and follow this for about 1/3 mile through
mature Douglas-fir forest (Hammond's Flycatcher heard in this area),
until the road comes out into an open area that was clearcut and then
replanted with young trees that are now about 10-15 ft high, with
riparian forest (mainly big-leaf maple) downslope on the north side of
the road. Most of the birds mentioned above can be found right at this
interface.
Happy birding,
Joel
