Here are some arrival dates for our yard these past few years. (Gaps don't necessarily indicate a lack of birdy visitors, but may be explained by a lack of vigilance on my part or by a congenital sloppiness in my record-keeping.)

CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD

2003
May 10, male
May 17, female

2004
April 20, male
April 26, male

2007
April 25, male

2009
April 11, male

2010
April 18 & 19, male

Quite a range. The preponderance of males may be attributable to their earlier arrival and to my subsequent lack of attention once I have Calliope on my year list. I assume we see Calliopes here in Peoria because they follow the river in migration. Just a guess.

BULLOCK'S ORIOLE

2004
April 30

2005
April 26

2006
April 28

2007
April 27

2008
April 26

2009
April 30

2010
April 23 (Just guessing.)

Earliest seen arrivals were always males, but that's probably because they make the most noise. We seem to have more Orioles each year. We had at least five nesting pairs in Peoria last summer: two in our yard (though not at the same time), two down toward the church, and one more that I can't exactly recall.
