Hi all,
I spend some time birding around Brownsville yesterday afternoon in lieu of working in the yard.
At the Highway 228 sewage ponds the highlight was about 250 Dunlin loafing on the bank. The ponds contained paired Bufflehead, Northern shovelers, Green-winged teal, and a good number of Lesser Scaup, with one lone male Wood duck. The ponds behind the Villa truckstop had Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked ducks, Green-winged teal, Mallards, Coots, Common yellowthroat, and Savannah sparrows.
The area referred to as "Smith Lake" off of Holmes Rd (gravel road) had a nice male Northern Harrier, Barn, Tree, and Violet-green swallows, White- and Golden-crowned sparrows a couple of Greater yellowlegs, CA quail, Northern Shovelers, Green-winged and Cinnamon Teal. The best shorebird site for the day was at the Rice Ponds on the other side of Gap Rd, which contained 20 + Greater yellowlegs, about 150 Dunlin, and 50+ smaller peeps, the majority of which were Least Sandpipers with some Westerns thrown into the mix. Also present here were several Cinnamon teal.
Does anyone have the contact information to ask for permission to bird the rest of the rice ponds that are further back off the road?
