[birding] no black hawk spotted; other goodies

Hi Don & All,

Nearly an identical set of results for me today, though I was driving
(to transport another load of Willamette Valley Birding Trail guides):

One BARN SWALLOW flying around the old cement block building at the
intersection of U.S. Hwy 20 and Independence Hwy -- the second time in
the past five years that I've seen my first-of-year Barn Swallow at this
location, seems like they like this location.

Nothing resembling a Black Hawk (or any other type of hockey player
whether North Star, or Red Wing, or Bruin, Flyer, Oiler, etc.) along
Pacific Blvd. or Looney Lane. Also no Golden Eagle, though I have to
wonder if the one that Tristen reported was the same one that Wil and I
saw fly over our place a few days ago, headed toward Albany.

No SARA ORANGETIP butterflies today, but I forgot to mention that Martha
pointed out a couple for me at E.E. Wilson yesterday, among the
cabbage-white types.

Back at home, the local PURPLE FINCH has switched from flycatcher
imitations (with stray warbles) to Cassin's Vireo imitations in recent
few days. Bob Altman once pointed out that they seem to do that not long
before real Cassin's Vireos show up, just to confuse things. The
difference is that the Purple Finch is a little faster and a little
richer in tone ... plus if you listen for a while, he'll throw in some
other bits of song eventually.

Happy birding,
Joel
