1.Alan Contreres and I birded royal ave, bruce road, baskett slough, and
peavine rd.
2.Just after turning onto royal ave we saw a woodpecker on a post by an oak
tree, which we though was acorn woodpecker but as we looked at it, it turned
out to be a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER.
3.At Royal ave(fern ridge) there were TREE SWALLOW and VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW
at the parking lot, also in the flooded grassy area by the parking lot were
many GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and at least one pair of CINNAMON TEAL, as we walked
toward the obsevation platform we had COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, MARSH WREN and
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS singing, NORTHERN HARRIER were working the dead
grassy area, we saw 1 AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN flying on the east lake, when
we got to the observation platformed we scoped the tufted duck lake and
found nothing but RING-NECKED DUCKS, LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD and COOTS, we
walked the along the dike to the left of the observation platform and saw at
least 6 WHITE PELICANS and at least 1 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, there
were many RING-BILLED GULLS flying around, while walking back i scoped a
little raft of scaup and saw one with a brilliant golden eye and really
white on the side, sure enough a TUFTED DUCK, we had great looks at the bird
just floating on top of the water showing his tuft west of the observation
platform, on the way back we had 1 breeding plumage MYRTLE WARBLER and 1
breeding plumage AUDUBONS WARBLER in the same thicket, we also had a COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT posing for us about 20 ft away.
4.At bruce road(finley) in the flooded field just before mcfadden marsh
there were 10+ GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 20+ GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 20+ AMERICAN
WIGEON, there were no ducks and no geese on mcfadden marsh just 500+
swallows, at the end of bruce road there were WESTERN BLUEBIRDS and all the
normal birds.
5. At baskett slough we drove coville road and had are FOY CLIFF SWALLOW and
had another pair of CINNAMON TEAL along with the usual ducks, there was
WESTERN MEADOWLARK and AMERICAN PIPITS further down the road.
6. We meet up will Paul Sullivan and Carol Karlen and went up about 10 miles
up peavine road and tooted for Pygmy owl, and sure enough we had 1 NORTHERN
PYGMY-OWL answer us, after about 2 minutes he came in close enough to put
him in the scope for amazing views, after the Pygmy owl we had 2 PILEATED
WOODPECKERS calling and eventually we found them and put them in the scope,
we heard a saw RED CROSSBILL, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
7.On the way home we went down riverbend rd and saw an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER just after the bridge, we also saw at least 5 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE
along the power line on 99, also 2 GREAT EGRETS in a flooded field along 99.
Great day of birding!!
Thanks to Alan, Paul and Carol for getting me 5 life birds!!
