I found Joel's posting this morning of interest, because I saw four swans at somewhat of a distance in a grass field on the north of Linn West Rd, just before the railroad track and intersection with Hwy 99. Three of the birds were bright white, and a fourth bird was fairly gray and presumably an immature. I did not have my binos with me, and even if I had there was too much traffic to have stopped for a good look. Someone in the area with time today may want to go by and take a look.

Also present this morning was a 2nd winter Bald eagle in a tree at the intersection of Forry and Seven Mile Rds.

Hello folks,

A family group of four TRUMPETER SWANS (two adults, one bigger than the

other, and two dusky immatures) were in the field on the NW side of the

intersection of Hwy 99W and Airlie/Suver Rd., which is roughly midway

between Monmouth and Corvallis.

That general neighborhood, from Suver west to Airlie and thence NW to

Maple Grove, is an annual winter location for 40 to 60+ Trumpeters. I

haven't been checking that area in recent weeks so who knows when they

arrived. Normally the earliest arrivals will congregate in flood ponds

along the Luckiamute River to the SW of Helmick State Park. Tundra Swans

also occur in similar numbers around the neighborhood.

Happy birding,

Joel
