This morning I went looking for some birds that are hard to find here in Linn County. At the rice fields south of Brownsville an AMERICAN BITTERN was gulunking, and a CHAT was chattering. A WILD TURKEY was at the gap of Gap Road. There were several VESPER SPARROWS along Belts Road, two or three of which sat up for good viewing. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW did too, on the fence beside the road, giving me a better look than I've ever had before. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was beside Tub Run Road, but I couldn't locate the Ash-throated Flycatcher, even though I staked out the north end of Tub Run for almost an hour.
Even with the miss, it was a fine day for birding. A slightly overcast and chilly morning was brightened by many LAZULI BUNTINGS, and there was no significant headwind on my way home. I sure am glad I decided not to ride out to Malheur this weekend.
