[birding] Finley Rock Wren

Molly, et al,

I hope it didn't sound like I was discounting your sighting, Molly.  2 in one day in the county (plus Hendrik's yesterday in Lane) is fairly remarkable given there seems to be only a handful of previous records in Benton.  I do also recall that Gary Gibson also found one in an old quarry near his house, sometime since 1993 as well. I would expect that to be in the Chat as well. I looked at BOGR and there's little mention of west-of-the Cascades-summit records. It does mention them migrating (Oregon) in "early April to mid-May", with the peak in early May.

The one at Chip Ross 2 years ago was hanging out amongst the remnants of a fallen oak tree--faux rocks?!

There was one at... drum roll... Pigeon Butte a while back, but since 1993... I'd guess late 90s.  (It should be in The Chat and Hendrik may have it from making updates to his BoBC draft.)  My memory is that it was found by Ron Jameson of Philomath. I looked for it with no luck.  There was one at Chip Ross Park, May 15, 2007. I also found one with Rich Hoyer in the Coos Bay area May 18, 2002.  Per Hendrik's draft, two other Benton county records are 1 on Marys Peak May 13, 1993 and 1 on Vineyard Mtn. May 5, 1989. So (mid-)May seems to be the "typical" time to see them in w. Oregon.  (One other Benton record is September 1-27, 1970 at Finley. Also, in July 1993 fledged young were seen on Marys Peak.)

Thanks to Rich Hoyer for putting the thought of new birds in the area on the brain this morning. If I hadn't read that post before I went out the door, I may not have looked twice at the lbj in the quarry. I quickly noticed how pale it was when it flew from rock to rock and had to get the scope on it. Got great looks of a ROCK WREN at Pigeon Butte quarry. This may be the first record on the refuge. Unfortunately it was quiet, I do love their song! I just read that Hendrick Herlyn also saw one on the coast in Lane County, maybe they are moving in!
Molly~
