A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was patrolling the outer perimeter of the Tangent Sewage Ponds this Saturday morning.
The first RUFOUS H. returned to Peoria on the 11th, and the VIOLET GREENS returned the next day. It wasn't until the 18th that the Violet Greens and the Tree Swallows suddenly started competing over the 40-odd nest boxes that are within sight of our house. That was the same day that our first OSPREY returned, and the Hardhack, Willows and Ninebark all started to leaf out. That must have been the first day of spring.
Friday the 13th there were about two dozen BARROW'S GOLDENEYES below Foster Dam. Midday was almost windless, so above the dam the water was glassy smooth and easy to scope for every single bird--which turned out to be hardly any. Two WESTERN GREBES were out in the middle, along with some RING-NECKED DUCKS and PIED-BILLED GREBES.
That's all for now.
