1. mary garrard, marcia cutler, & i did the dunn forest area as randy & pam described below.
2. the PURPLE MARTINS were indeed there. we estimate that if you walk without birding, road 110 is about 10 minutes walk from tampico, and the tree is about 3 minutes up the hill (you can see the tree from corner of 110 & 100).
3. we also walked out 100 further as well.
4. birds between tampico & 100/110 intersection included CHAT, LAZULI BUNTING, CHIPPING SPARROWS, PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER, CASSIN'S VIREO, lots of american goldfinches, rufous hummingbirds, waxwings, b;ack-headed grosbeaks, orange-crowned warblers, yellowthroats, willow flycatchers, wrentits, bushtits, etc. most common bird was white-crowned sparrow.
5. just past 100/110 there were a pair of RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS in a nest hole on the left and singing BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER on the right. also western tanager and house wrens in that area.
6. further along where 100 meets 130 we had a posing male MACGUILLEVRAY'S WARBLER.
7. the frustrating bird was a raptor that mary & marcia did not see well enough, but impression was a large falcon with brown back? another bird that got away.

Hi Rich -

It's about a 30 minute walk to the nest tree. 20 minutes on the 100 road then left and uphill on the 110 road for about 10 minutes. The old, bleached-white, snag is a few feet off the left side of the 110 road. The hole is about 10 feet up and faces west. The birds started chirping at us and flying around excitedly as we approached so we didn't spend much time near the tree.

On a late evening hike along the 100 and 110 roads in Dunn Forest off Tampico Road we found male and female PURPLE MARTINS occupying a nest cavity in an old oak snag. Other birds included MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, and MOUNTAIN QUAIL.
