The Scout Trail (200 Road) at OSU's Dunn Forest off Tampico Road was very
birdy yesterday evening from 8-9:30 pm. Many singing SWANINSON'S
THRUSHES, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES, COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS, SONG SPARROWS, HOUSE WRENS, and BEWICK'S WRENS. Two
singing MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS were in old and new clearcuts. Other
singers were: WILLOW FLYCATCHER, WINTER WREN, WESTERN TANAGER,
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK. Also saw a GREAT-HORNED OWL and a BARRED OWL.
After an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER made himself known by exclaiming
MCMINNEVILLE!, we watched a second Olive-sided join the male high in a
live Doug-fir tree just past where the Scout Trail crosses the creek. The
male flew off and the second bird (assumed female) bellied-down into what
looked like a shallow stick nest. The male drove-off a CEDAR WAXWING that
had wandered too close to the nest, the two birds nearly hitting us as
they zipped by.
