Hello,
Lisa and I led the Audubon Society of Corvallis' Birding by Ear class field trip at Willamette Park this morning. We enjoyed the songs of Bewick's Wrens, Warbling Vireos and Black-headed Grosbeaks. There were many swallows over the river and we got good looks of Violet-green Swallows perching on a partially-submerged snag. Among these swallows was a Northern Rough-winged Swallow. Spotted Sandpipers were active on the gravel bar island near the Evanite Boat Ramp. Some other forest birds we got to hear and see were Cedar Waxwings, Brown Creepers, Yellow Warblers (brief glimpse), an American Robin, Swainson's Thrushes (we actually spotted one), Song Sparrows, Black-capped Chickadees, Bushtits, Spotted Towhees, House Finches, Western Wood-Pewees and others. We got a good look at an Empidonax flycatcher but it would not oblige the bird class instructors with a sound for identification (although most likely a Willow or Pacific-slope due to habitat.)
