Yesterday (1/17) I paddled the outer reaches of Snag Boat Bend and found a GREEN HERON, a BLACK PHOEBE, and I relocated the SWAMP SPARROW near where I found it on 12/30--just west of where the walking trail turns onto the levee. The seasonal canary grass marshland there was packed with MARSH WRENS, a species that I had once thought was hard to find in Linn County for general lack of marshland. I must not have been looking smart enough. (Snag Boat is still closed to foot traffic because of damage done to the boardwalk during the recent high water.)

Today (1/18) I scoped the Diamond Hill mitigation wetlands and rode the Gap Road/Belt Roads loop. I couldn't find an Emperor Goose among the various amorphous Canada/Cackling Goose flocks, but one white goose with black wingtips stood out in the sky and on the ground. Judging by its small size relative to the others, it was very likely the ROSS'S GOOSE reported earlier. At the wetlands a EURASIAN WIGEON was in among a squadron of Americans.

All the birds mentioned in this post were pursued without the use of a motor. (My human-powered list for 2009, to-date: 91.)
