[birding] egrets hunting

I can't help but comment, this thread reminds me of a trip to Ankeny years ago where I watched an egret catch what I think was a gopher near the Pintail parking area. The bird managed to swallow the (huge!) critter down but you could actually see the rodent punching and struggling in the egret's neck as it slowly worked its way down to the stomach, protesting all the way! Looked quite uncomfortable... Unfortunately, back before the digital camera but definitely memorable.

re: the egret catching a vole - I one time 
witnessed a great egret catch up and eat a sandpiper that was among quite a few 
that were wandering around at the egret's feet.
