There was a Swift watch downtown this past September. I wasn't involved,
but from what I recall, most of the action was at or near the Whiteside
Theater and there was surprisingly little action at the 1st Presbyterian.
Hopefully others can give you more specific information, which is why I'm
cc'ing the Mid-valley Birders list.

Subject: [asc-boardnews] Vaux's Swifts in the church chimney

Rana contacted me about the First Presbyterian Church's plan to
significantly expand the church -- specifically about the impact of this
change on Vaux's Swifts. The swifts use the chimney, but I'm uncertain about
how much, and would like to have a little more information before writing a
letter to the church and maybe the Corvallis planning people.

Do the swifts nest in the chimney, using it in spring and early summer, or
just roost there during migration? If the latter, are they there fall and
spring, or just fall? Do they use it every year? Rana thought that 3000-6000
Swifts use it, a number that would seem to apply only during migration -
yes?

Any information would be appreciated. The deadline for the letter is
tomorrow, so anything you know now would be helpful.

Thanks,
Dave
