Hello,

2/20/09 - About 30 people enjoyed the 'night life' in at Finley NWR last night. The 2nd annual Owl Night trip was organized by the Friends of the Willamette Valley Refuges, in conjunction with the Audubon Society of Corvallis and with refuge employees. Everybody had a great time.

We couldn't match the owl success of last year. Nevertheless we did encounter 4 species. At the Prairie Overlook we spotted two Short-eared Owls at dusk. Over at the Finley Rd. barn we got a couple brief glimpses of a Barn Owl flying in the vicinity. Everybody got to hear numerous renditions of my Barred Owl impression but there were no answers. At Woodpecker Loop one party heard a Western Screech-Owl briefly at the parking area. There was also one calling from the Homer Campbell Trail. We had no owl success at Mill Hill but heard a distant Great Horned Owl from the nearby utility barn. One or two other Great Horned Owls were briefly heard throughout the night.

W also encountered some small mammals and glow worms. For more on that, go see the report on Mid-Valley Nature:
