Hi folks,
This morning a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was tooting incessantly from
Tampico Ridge about 300-400 yards south of our place, at 5:10 AM when I
walked out to get the paper. It was still going at 6:00 AM but sounded
like it had moved farther south. The first location is approximately
where the north end of Frontage Rd. comes out on Hwy 99W, on the west
side of E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area.
>From late January through February seems to be the time of year to hear
Saw-whets tooting spontaneously, if you can find a quiet enough place to
listen near the right habitat (dense conifers adjoining open areas). At
our place, it takes a major lull in the pre-dawn traffic along Hwy 99W
to hear them -- plus the Great Horned Owls need to be quiet.
Happy birding,
Joel
