Hello folks,
This being the last night of count week for the Airlie-Albany CBC, a
couple of our kids (Wil & Martha) and I went out for a bit of owling
along Soap Creek & Tampico Roads. We had two WESTERN SCREECH-OWLS
respond to whistled imitations close in from one of the MacDonald State
Forest gates, one distant NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL responding to whistled
imitations from across the valley in Dunn State Forest, and a total of
four GREAT HORNED OWLS that called without prompting, in about an hour
with five or six owling stops.
We tried for Barred Owl at the east edge of Dunn Forest near the 400
Road, where I saw one recently, but a Great Horned Owl started up from
the north side of Tampico, then another from the riparian belt to the
east, so we gave up. Nice weather for owling though.
Happy birding,
Joel
