While watering trees yesterday, we got great looks of a Green Heron at McFadden's Marsh. It was perched on the bridge over the wet spots, dove down after something (hopefully bull frogs!) and then flew down the road to perch on the bridge over the next wet spot. A White-tailed Kite was perched on a snag on the dry western side of Cabell Marsh. Sort of a strange place to see one but I guess there would be critters running around between reed canary grass patches where the dirt is exposed. White pelicans continue out there as well.
Also saw a couple dozen elk off of McFarland Rd between the RR tracks and Muddy Cr.
We have traded in our wrentit and yellow-breasted chats calling at the old office for white-breasted nuthatch and acorn woodpeckers calling at the new office. Also had Purple Martins flying over last week (we're working on a plan to put out nest boxes soon if anyone would like to help us figure that out!)
Not a bad trade... also, a note that the Wild Goose Nature Store is opening this Friday so there will now be Friends group members present at the office on most weekends.
Molly~
