I spent a fair portion of Saturday birding the backyard. Among the 55 species seen were all five of the usual valley swallows out over the river together, including first-of-year BARN SWALLOW, CLIFF SWALLOW, and NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW. In the evening we got our first male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD. We've had Calliopes visit in four different years prior to this, but never had one show up earlier than April 25. The only other migrants found were a few ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, several COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, and at least two excellent LINCOLN SPARROWS, who showed up in our yard for the first time this year.
